Types of passports
The Indian passport is divided mainly into two types
- Ordinary Passports: Passports issued to ordinary citizens of the country are called ordinary passports. These passport holders can travel to foreign countries for vacation or business purposes. It is maroon in colour.
- Official or diplomatic passports: These passports are issued when people travel on official duties for official purposes. Official passports are red in colour while diplomat passports have a dark blue cover.
Documents required for passport renewal
You must carry the following documents along for the passport renewal process
- Original old passport.
- Self-attested copies of the passport's first two and last two pages.
- Self-attested copy of the ECR/non-ECR page.
- Self-attested copy of the page of observation made by the Passport Issuing Authority, if any.
- Self-attested copy of the validity extension page in terms of the Short Validity Passport (SVP).
- Proof of documents that eradicate the cause of issuance of Short Validity Passport (SVP).
Passport renewal process
The passport renewal process is as follows:
- You can use your registered id to log in to the Passport Seva website once you've completed the registration process.
- Now, select 'Apply for a New Passport/ Passport Reissue.' Fill out the form to the best of your ability and submit it.
- Then, on the 'pay and schedule appointment' page, enter your payment information. You can pick a convenient passport office and go there with the necessary paperwork.

Points to note while visiting the Passport Seva Kendra/ Passport office
- Make sure you reach the Passport Seva Kendra 15 minutes ahead of your scheduled time. Also, do not forget to carry the printed receipt of your appointment or show the appointment text at the counter.
- Carry the required documents with you. The documents should be original along with their self-attested copies. You can also go to the ‘document advisor’ on www.passportseva.gov.in to know more.
- If the passport being issued is for a minor, carry a recent passport size photograph of the child on white background.
- Though photographs will be clicked at the centre, you are required to have two recent colored passport size photographs with you (on white background).
- Inside the passport office, only the applicant is allowed to enter. However, they can be accompanied in case of senior citizens or physically challenged or minors.
- After you have your documents checked at PSK, you will be given a paper token. Counter A will process your application first, followed by Counters B and C. At all times, stay vigilant and keep an eye on the token projection screens to see when your application will be processed. Before leaving, please obtain an acknowledgment slip at the Exit counter. You must also complete the feedback form at the exit counter.
- The remaining service charge for Tatkal applications must be paid at the Passport Office. After you've made your payment, please take the payment receipt from the counter.
- Applicants applying under the "TATKAL" program should be aware that their application processing at the Passport Office may take up to 2 hours due to additional verifications that must be completed before such applications can be processed. As a result, applicants for "TATKAL" should plan their schedules properly.
